Pangong Tso Lake : Clear, Calm and Unending Expanse

Nestled in the far flung barren regions of Ladakh, Pangong Tso lake falls under both countries, India and China. This is because, only one third of the lake is in India, remaining two third of the lake is in China. Pangong Lake is also popular as "Hollow Lake" and is 5 km wide and 134 km long. With its location on Changtang plateau (eastern Ladakh) at a height of 14270 feet, provides a paradisiacal view to the visitors. Thus, they could enjoy the natural setting of the place as take pleasure in viewing the color effects created as sun rays fall on the lake.

As the area is under the control of the army and therefore requires a pass (chang la)signed from the Leh�s deputy commissioner. For reaching the site, one needs to travel about 30 km down the Manali-Leh highway and reach Karu. Here, the way splits into two ways, one leading to Manali and other towards the Pangong Tso (113 km). Proceeding from Karu is only possible after verification of the documents. On the road to the lake, one needs to clear five army check-posts. At the second check-post, Zingral (15,500 ft), the army retains a copy of the consent document as this area is rocky and inclined to landslides.

Moving ahead on this rocky terrain, reach Chang La (at 17,350 ft) which is the 3rd highest motorable pass of the world. While reaching here, one is welcomed with the traces of snow. While crossing the valley, one gets the view of the picturesque mountains reflecting colors such as violet, brown and green. Soon after, you will enter the area where you will find pastured with mountain cows and yaks. Gradually, the rocky terrains change to sandy area.

As you cross this area, you get the sudden sight of Pangong Lake. One has to cross gravelly terrain and cover the distance of almost 2 km to reach the lake. The sight of the crystal clear, blue water is highly relaxing and refreshing for the visitors. Crossing Lukung, you may see the lake emerging out of its veil. The stretch of the lake covers the entire length of Ruthog region and Chushul.

Thereafter, the stretch of the lake enters the china through the Indo-China border and the tourists are allowed to visit the hamlet, Spangmik (8 km from Lukung). The clear water of the lake provides magnificent views like the reflection of colors like purple, red, orange, violet, green, and blue, similar to that of a rainbow. The onlookers are mesmerized with the multicolor canvas painting alike view of the lake. The lake is also adorned with exotic flora and fauna and one could spot bar-headed geese, waterfowl, and black-necked Siberian crane. The visitors may also opt for night camping near the Pangong Lake and enjoy the serenity of the place.
